Mezcal is produced like tequila from the agave plant, but from other plant species (espadin). These Mezcal agaves grow mainly in the state of Oaxaca, where the best Mezcal is also produced. Furthermore, the production process differs from that of Tequila. The Mezcal is roasted over charcoal in contrast to Tequila, which is heated in ovens. Thereby it gets its smoky aroma. The Mezcal Gusano Rojo has a real "Maguey worm" inside, which is actually a moth caterpillar of a bullheaded butterfly. Some might find it disgusting when a dead insect swims in their glass, for the others it is just part of it... ;-) There are two types of "agave worms" living in agave plants: the red ones, which live in the roots, and the white ones, which live in the leaves of the agave. The worm (the moth caterpillar) gives the Mezcal its aroma and is naturally completely harmless.Tasting notes:Earthy, fine and mild taste. Peanut tones, taste of ripe cooked agave.
